NEW MEDIA CURATION #1

The Dating Apocalypse (Hinge App)

This video is a dystopian and utopian view of the present and the future. At first, it shows the bad side of current dating apps. This demonstrates the “hook-up culture” dating sites like Tinder as a bad carnival. You can ride the “Cycle of Loneliness,” play “Catch a Catfish,” or participate in “Swipe Out.” These are all references to the current online dating scene, in which people play “games,” aren’t whom they say they are, are physically superficial, feel lonely, and find no real connections with people. This video shows how finding a real relationship can be dismal online.  In the second part, he finds an exit with the logo for Hinge, “the dating app meant to be deleted.” After exiting the carnival, he finds a much happier, sunnier place, like heaven, where only happy couples exist. He immediately tries to do something normalized in the other dating sites by swiping on a possible match. She stops him and holds his hand. This shows that she will treat him like a human being, and they will and are making a real connection. This commercial shows that the other dating sites are the dystopian present and future of dating, and they are the

utopian way to find love.

Jen_ny 69 or Jennifer Ruiz is an Instagram Influencer from Riverside, California. She originally started as a makeup tutorial poster on Instagram and YouTube but has exploded into a whole Instagram personality. Her account depicts her as a beautiful woman with trendy outfits, perfect hair and makeup, expensive cars, and just as popular friends. She is also portrayed as someone who is in touch and proud of their Mexican American roots, a family woman and someone who is relatable. You can see she is constantly promoting one brand or another and this gained her enough popularity to attempt a music career. What is unintentionally revealed through her posts is that her friends are just business collaborations and these popular friends are only around for photo ops to share followers from one influencer to another. Her posts about how relatable she is show that she has money to not be like us and that’s the big difference between her and her followers. Her few and far in between photos of her husband and her son only seem to make her look like a family woman but she’s far more invested in her business ventures and how she looks. The post I linked is one of those posts she made to seem relatable because she is seen asleep on the couch after eating Hot Cheetos but you can also see her hands with diamond rings, expensive wig, expensive make up and she still looks better than you.
