Curating ePortfolio

Changes made from previous class.

On the home page I added my elevator pitch video and a contact page underneath the video. I also changed the background photo underneath the video.

On the about me page, I removed the stock photo and added my portrait. I also changed the layout for my bio to be horizontal to my photo. I added a course projects page and moved my previous classes’ work to it. I created a title for the previous class. I created a 2nd title and space for new work for this class. The “New Media Curation #1” section sits underneath the “COMM260 Understanding Media” title and the video was changed to it’s original aspect ratio. I kept portfolio to add work I will be doing for my internship there.

The easiest part was that I had a page set up from a previous class. I had already picked out a theme I liked and I didn’t have to spend time finding one which was the hardest part last time. The most challenging part was writing the script for my elevator pitch and then recording myself. I had to do a couple of takes to shake the nervousness but the more I practiced the better I got.

I feel okay about my online presence. I know there is more I can do as far as getting recommendations on my LinkedIn profile. I need to place articles, photos, videos, and graphics I have created in my various roles. I also need more help on my resume. It is written with Navy language that doesn’t translate easy to a civilian workforce. I also will be looking for a different role than the one I last had in the military.

Reflection on Leadership

As part of my first deployment, I had the best leader I’ve ever had in any job. The team was made up of Navy Mass Communication Specialists who were individually deployed as the Public Affairs Officers on the smaller ships that composed the Carrier Strike Group. Before deployment, he made sure we were ready to personally and professionally take care of ourselves and the missions we were assigned to. We were trained to do every aspect of our job. While on deployment, as a distance leader, he would guide us through tough situations. He was also very adamant about being able to celebrate our achievements. Half-way through deployment I reenlisted and he was able to use an ongoing event to fly over himself and the rest of our team to attend my reenlistment. After I returned and was assigned leadership positions, I emulated his style of leadership as it proved effective with our team during hard times.

Reflection on Events

I went to the Jonas Brothers Concert last fall and I wish it had been better organized or that they would have implemented an online way to upload our vaccination cards along with an ID. The line to get into the concert with a vaccination card was 30 minute wait. For those that didn’t have their card or hadn’t been vaccinated they required them to be tested on site. Which meant waiting in line for a test, paying $40 for a rapid test, waiting 20-30 minutes for results. The cell phones towers in the area aren’t equipped to handle the amount of people attending concerts at the venue and Ticketmaster website and app weren’t loading to display the tickets or to get results from the COVID test. I would have explained expectations and given directions for people to download their mobile tickets beforehand. Ticketmaster allows you to download tickets and hold them in the Apple wallet or in the Google wallet without access to wifi. I would have also formed some sort of verification system of vaccination card, id, and ticket. I think since the reopening, events no longer require vaccination cards and that part of event planning isn’t a hassle anymore. I also see more advertisement of downloading of mobile tickets to mobile wallets.
