SWOT

Strengths -They are a well-recognized organization in the Peninsula Community -They have a volunteer program to supplement staff (Volunteer opportunities). -They have a petting zoo that draws people to the shelter, even if they don’t plan to adopt (SPCA Barnyard).

Weaknesses -They have a small social media foot print, they focus on Facebook and Instagram. They post the same content on both pages. -They have a small paid staff of 22 people. -They don’t update the list of adoptable animals and include photos of them.

Opportunities -People love animals. -People want to attend events after the pandemic. -Military bases bring new people to the area throughout the year.

Threats -13 animal shelters in the Hampton Roads area. -Virginia Beach SPCA and Norfolk SPCA have similar names but no association. -All shelters are looking for donors, corporate sponsorships, small business partnerships, and animal adopters. -Unfair laws against certain breeds of dogs based on stereotypes (§ 3.2-6542. Establishment of Dangerous Dog Registry).

Event Recommendation

I recommend doing a Petting Zoo grand re-opening carnival. The carnival would have Food Trucks and vendors lined up in the parking lot and would require a $10 donation to enter. The petting zoo normally is a $3 fee but for this event it would be raised because it’s an event and it is also a fundraiser.

Target audience/s: The targets would be community members. We’re aiming at families because they will most enjoy the reopening of the Petting Barn. The Petting Barn can also be used for birthday parties and classroom field trips and we would like to highlight that. A secondary target audience is members of the community interested in adopting animals.

Location: Peninsula SPCA in Newport News. The petting zoo is behind the main building. The main building with adoptable animals. The front parking lot would be full of food vendors, food trucks, and community organizations. Parking would be available across the Avenue of the Arts.

Likely benefit/s: Peninsula SPCA is likely to benefit by receiving profit from ticket sales to enter the carnival. They will also probably get a percentage from the sales from the vendors. They will garner increased interest in their Barn parties and field trips. They will also have some adoptions take place, as well as appointments for future adoptions, and interest for adoptions. They can garner interest in other programs as well by placing booths for the programs in the parking lot.
